Wet Plate Collodion Workshop with Greg Martin – November 19

wet-plate-collodion-helen-by-greg-martin

We are excited to present our first ever Wet Plate Collodion Workshop at the Cleveland Print Room! Come and learn about this rare 1800’s photographic process that is still being practiced today.

This one-day, hands-on workshop will be an intensive introduction and exploration of wet plate collodion photography. Everything will be covered including the overview of the process, discussions of proper equipment, chemical preparation and mixing.

Throughout the ages, photographers have valued the ethereal look, handmade quality, and arcane yet simple materials of ambrotypes and tintypes. Wet Plate Collodion is the photographic process of pouring a light-sensitive collodion solution onto a plate of glass or blackened metal, then exposing and developing that plate while it’s still wet.

This much-requested workshop will cover how to mix all of the chemistry used in the wet plate collodion process (collodion, developer, fixer, silver nitrate solution, and sandarac varnish), proper handling of the necessary chemicals, where to purchase chemicals and materials, and recommended recipes.

Students will learn the techniques of preparing the plate, cutting and cleaning glass, pouring collodion, exposing, developing, fixing, and varnishing. All materials including chemicals, glass, and metal will be supplied. Each participant will be allowed to make at least one complete plate (5” x 7”) to take home.

Greg Martin and Matt Beckwith will be the instructors for this workshop.

Greg Martin is an artist/designer from Cleveland, Ohio. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Martin has been practicing the art and craft of wet plate collodion photography for over 13 years. His collodion photography has been exhibited in numerous shows throughout the region, and has received multiple awards and recognition for his work.

Due to the intensive nature of this workshop, the class will be limited to only 10 people.

Cost for this workshop is $275 for members and $295 for non-‐members. Feel free to bring a lunch.

Please contact info@clevelandprintroom.com or call 216-802-9441 to prepay and register for this workshop.

NOTE: Wet plate collodion is a photographic process involves directly handling chemistry. Proper safety precautions will be followed, but those with issues with chemical sensitivities or issues with strong smells please note.

The show title explains the manner in which the work will be sold during the exhibit. Each member is asked to submit one or two photographic pieces. At least one will be hung and when one work sells, the second piece will be added to the gallery walls for sale. The weekend of the opening, Saturday & Sunday, December 3 and 4, is the ArtCraft Building Holiday Sale.
